oracle 9i release 2 on SunOs 5.9

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number 10 with name "_SYSSMU10$" too small

Could you please tell me why this is happening and also how to avaid such types of error?

extent management is local and segment_space_management is manual.

Thanks,
Shahnaz.

It basically means the session's data got flushed out of the buffer because it had been there long enough for other data to take it's place. It can be caused by a number of things, so yea, do some research.

You can avoid this error by increasing undo_retention time period, ultimately you have to increase the size of undo tablespace.

Thanks all for your nice responses.
But my query is not taking too much time, it is taking atmost 30 minutes. Do you mean that i need to change the value of undo_retention periodically? in that what is the value suitable for this type error?

Thanks,
Shahnaz.
