what is the use and purpose of setting db_files parameter when there is already an limit to number of datafiles that can be created which has been specified using MAXDATAFILES clause in controlfile

DB_FILES is initsid.ora parameter that is bound to the instance and hence is editable. MAXDATFILES is bound to controlfile (when you create the database) and not editable (unless you recreate the controlfile).
