I am a newbie to oracle stuff. We have 9i running on unix box. If you want to upgrade database to 10g, do we need to install whole 10g binaries and then run upgrade stuff. Please let me know

yes.
The upgrade manual found in documentation pretty much accounts all the information.

In most cases, you can just export and import data from 9i to 10g.
Look into documentation. Weigh your options. Test it before doing it in production.
