We have a 8i installation on Solaris with 8 databases running on it. Our plan is to upgrade to 10g. When I install the 10g binaries in a separate Oracle Home, do I need to shut down the 8i databases and processes or can I keep them running while I install 10g?

You do not need to shutdown the Oracle 8i DB. However, don't do the installation during peak processing hours - just in case you hit some problems.
